Before you can receive a dental implant or other treatment, our Denver oral surgeon may need to provide you with a bone grafting treatment. This procedure helps ensure you have strong, healthy supporting bones for your teeth and smile.
What is Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that aims to repair or rebuild your jawbone bones through the transplantation of bone tissue. This type of care enhances or restores the jawbone’s volume and density, which is crucial for the stability and support of dental implants. This procedure is often necessary when a patient has experienced bone loss due to periodontal disease, trauma or tooth extraction. The graft material can be sourced from the patient’s own body (autograft), a donor (allograft), or synthetic materials, each chosen based on the specific needs and conditions of the patient.
When is Bone Grafting Recommended?
Bone grafting may be recommended to:
- Restore bone density and volume after it has been lost due to tooth loss, gum disease or other factors
- Ensure a stable foundation for dental implants prior to implant placement
- To fill voids and promote structural stability after cysts or tumors have been removed
The Bone Grafting Procedure
The bone grafting procedure involves several key steps:
- Initially, a thorough evaluation is conducted, including X-rays or CT scans, to determine the precise needs of the patient.
- During the surgery, our oral surgeons will make an incision in the gum to expose the bone area requiring augmentation. The chosen graft material is then placed onto the site. In some cases, membranes may be used to protect the graft and encourage bone regeneration.
- Post-surgery, patients undergo a healing period, where the graft material gradually integrates with the existing bone tissue. This process, known as osseointegration, can take several months, after which the patient may be ready for further reconstructive procedures, such as dental implant placement.
You will receive directions and guidance throughout your grafting process to ensure the success of your treatment, including post-op instructions to encourage successful healing and integration of your graft.
